OSU shocks Sun Devils
OMAHA, Neb -- Forgotten and left for dead in early May, Oregon State looked like an unlikely defender of their 2006 National title. After dispatching of Pac Ten champion Arizona State 12-6, the Beavers are in the driver's seat to return to the CWS championship series.
They got a strong six innings from starter Mike Stutes (11-4) and scored in each of the first six innings as the beat the team that swept them in Corvallis in May.
"We needed a quality start against a good offensive club anbd we got it from Mike," said Oregon State coach Pat Casey. "It was important that we got on the board early especially after sitting a couple of hours waiting to play."
The game was delayed ninety-eight minutes after UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton played the longest game in CWS history earlier in the day.
"we wait all year to play in the College World Series and then we get fifty minutes to get to ready to play," said Arizona State coach Pat Murphy. "We felt rushed. It was wait, wait, then we have to get ready and start in fifty minutes. The people were still coming in the stadium in the third inning so the first few innings there was no atmosphere. There's no excuses though, Oregon State had the same thing to deal with. We just were not prepared to play."
Murphy surprised Casey by starting southpaw Brian Flores instead of righthander Josh Satow. Murphy chalked it up to feeling Flores would cause Casey to stack his lineup with righthanders and then he could come back with Satow. Flores lasted just an inning and Satow didn't last fair much better in his three inning stint. Flores allowed four hits and two runs. He was replaced by Satow who also had trouble with the Beaver hitters giving up eight hits and six runs in three innings.
Murphy said he had been waiting all season for his team to get hit in the mouth.
"We got our punch we have not all season," he said. "That first six innings was as bad as we have played all season."
Oregon State now moves into the Wednesday 6 p.m. CT winners bracket game where they face the winner of Tuesday night's UC Irvine vs Arizona State game.
Brian Flores will start his second game in as many days for the Sun Devils. UCI will counter with Erik Pettis.
