SEC: Pomeranz impresses
Hoover, AL -- The couple dozen professional scouts on hand to see Ole Miss southpaw Drew Pomeranz did not go home disappointed. The junior scattered six hits over seven innings as his Rebels defeated South Carolina 3-0.
Pomeranz may not have been as dominant as he had been in some midseason outings, but his velocity was up compared to the prior weeks and he made the Gamecocks earn everything they got.
"I felt really good," said Pomeranz. "I have been struggling to feel good with my rhythm but I felt really good today."
Offensively, the Rebels did not really break out with nine hits and three runs but they did get enough to give Pomeranz hit eighth win of the season.
South Carolina started midweek starter Nolan Belcher who left after three innings. He was one of six Gamecock pitchers used - all with some effectiveness. Belcher made a bad pitch and it cost him the lead on Miles Hamblin's third inning two-run home run.
"Obviously, I made a mistake," said Belcher. "This is the SEC. You make mistakes, they're going to make you pay for it."
Ole Miss batters seemed to face a different arm each time up. Taylor Hashman added an RBI single in the seventh. Closer Brett Huber capped the game with a two-inning save.
Ole Miss moves on to face Alabama at 4:30 CT Thursday. South Carolina takes on Auburn at 9:30 CT in an elimination game.
